Conference of the Parties (COP17) President Maite Nkoana-Mashabane smiles at a media briefing after an agreement was reached to extend the Kyoto protocol.

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday congratulated South Africa on the success of hosting the United Nations Climate Change conference in Durban.

“The outcome in Durban is a coup for Africa. Issues that had taken so long to resolve have been resolved on our soil,” Zuma said in a statement.

“We are very happy and proud of the South African team that worked so hard with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to make Durban succeed,” he said.

The COP17 conference had made resolutions, among others, to pledge money to start-up the Green Climate Fund which would help developing nations in their efforts to create clean energy in the future.

The conference also resulted in the launch of a road map towards a global climate accord that will, for the first time, include all major emitters of greenhouse gases.

Zuma congratulated International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa on an “outstanding achievement”. - Sapa

Is Zuma qualified to make a statement like that??? Maybe the parties were good, so he thinks it was a succsess. Just a waste of more taxpayers money.
