London - A smartwatch has been launched for children as young as five.

The £39.99 (about R700) Kidizoom device boasts a 1.4in touchscreen and a 0.3-megapixel camera along with software to edit and manipulate pictures.

A range of in-built gizmos includes a motion sensor, three games and voice recorder – and it has a USB port to download even more content.

It also tells the time – but maker Vtech hopes it will help youngsters develop other skills for the future. It comes hot on the heels of smartwatches for adults by Samsung and Sony as tech firms champion so-called wearable technology.

Spokesman Charlotte Johnson said: “We want children to be able play their part in the development of this technology.” - Daily Mail
