London - There must be many attics with a typewriter languishing in the corner – the owner wondering if it is worth keeping. Now there is renewed hope for what was the mainstay of offices in the pre-computer era.

On sale are vintage typewriters which have been upgraded to include a USB portal so they can be used for typing into a computer, laptop or tablet, including an iPad.

The makers, usbtypewriter.com have built in control, alt and backspace keys on to the typewriter keyboard. The enter button, which places the cursor on a new line, works in the same way by using the carriage return.

The upgraded typewriters, which start at £445 (about R5 200), can also still be used the original way – with keys hitting the paper through an ink ribbon.

DIY conversion kits to transform old typewriters so they can be used with computers are on sale for around £50. - Daily Mail
