It’s called “cat breading” and has gone viral on the internet, Facebook and numerous blogs. While some cat lovers have labelled it “ridiculous” others have said it’s merely a joke.
Cat breading involves cutting a hole in a piece of bread and putting it around a cat’s head. A picture is then taken and put on a blog or Facebook page dedicated to “cat breading”.
However, not everyone is pleased with the antics of the cat owners. Animal Behaviour Consultants of Southern Africa chairwoman Kathy Clayton said she did not agree with it.
“Cats use their whiskers and ears for sense and perception.
“When you put something over their head, you are affecting a cat by taking away their perception,” said Clayton.
She added that cats’ heart beats could rise and they could suffer from stress. “It can be viewed as a form of torture,” said Clayton. “I don’t agree with it and it should be stopped,” she said, adding that she was horrified when she saw pictures of it.
The National Council of SPCA’s spokeswoman, Christine Kuch, was opposed to the idea of publicising the “cat breading” as she felt it would “put ideas into people’s heads”. - Indepent on Saturday

Good so now I throw the neighbours cat with a bread and be famous. I must aim for the head though. Anyone ever heard of this "new" organisation...well done IOL you at least cater for the unknown for a sensational story

I think the cat breading opponents need to lighten up. My two cats were neither bothered or distressed by the breading events. They ARE not psychologically scarred whatsoever. Both cats were happy and affectionate during and afterwards. They are much more traumatized by a dirty litterbox. Lighten up and take a second to smile!!!

Jail the cat torturers, they are committing a crime. Cats are sensitive and dignified animals, every part of their fur and especailly their ears are super sensitive. This is absolutely STUPID! Cats are superior creatures in every way, especially superior to the idiots who are doing this and those commenting favourably on it. Get a life, you most probably see nothing wrong in dressing up a dog either, do you?

Look, at least they did not butter the bread and tie it to the kitty's back....toss that into the air and it will never come down.... ;)

As a scat lover and owner I have to say that while the cats obviously wont be very impressed, I honestly cant see any serious harm in this. I have to wonder however who could possibly have such a sad life to want to do this. Get a girlboyfriend. Get a blow-up doll for heaven's sake. GET A LIFE!!!

The cat in the picture does not look at all amused and if I tried it on my cat I would be clawed to pieces. People need to find better things to do with their time than annoy their pets

now now - people in Somalia and major parts of America are starving - and you go wasting a slice of bread?

@fuzzy, great, now you've given my cats ideas... I'll never be able to buy a loaf of bread again because they're going to want to see if they can fit inside of it! Seriously, my cats would think it to be a game... one would want to see how long he could keep the bread, another would want to see if she could eat everyone else's bread, the other boy would want to eat his own and the other girl would go feed the dogs (yes, she has been known to carry stolen food out of the kitchen for the dogs)

I could try that with my cat... I'd loose a finger and a eye... but i could try... lolz... seriously, what harm could a piece of bread do, its not like they shoved the cat into a whole loaf of bread...

Someone from Southern Africa needs to just take a joke. Maybe the cats are annoyed by it, but it causes no long-term harm, but significant long-term amusement!!

I'm a huge animals lover, vegetarian, member of PETA, ASPCA, WWF, Defenders of Wildlife, etc. And I have to admit I find this funny. There are horrible abuses happening to animals everyday. Pick your battles.

the deep psychological scarring endured by these poor cats is unspeakable! I suggest a class action suit against bakers.

Where did all these 'activists' suddenly start appearing from in the last couple of years? Seems like if you can't find a real job, you just call yourself an activist and people start to listen to what you have to say even though you have nothing of value to add. And oddly enough, most of them seem to be women.
