Nobody “lols” on the internet anymore, it seems – they “haha” and “hehe” instead.

The acronym for “laugh out loud”, which has been used by a generation of young people to express mirth online, is dying out, according to new research. Facebook analysed an array of user posts to establish how modern social media users indicate laughter and happiness to others.

The site found that 51.4 percent used “haha”. Using emoji symbols was the second biggest way of communicating a laugh, while just 1.9 percent of people said “lol”.

The Facebook study found that while “haha” was the most popular way of laughing across all age groups, “lol” retained some popularity among older people. Young people were most likely to favour an emoji. – Independent
