London - Becoming a grandparent used to be a chance to pass down words of wisdom – but not any longer, a study suggests.

Grandparents are being replaced by Google, Wikipedia and YouTube as nearly 90 percent of grandchildren do not ask them questions which can be looked up on the internet.

Only a third of those surveyed had been asked “what was it like when you were young?”.

And 96 percent said they asked far more questions of their grandparents when they were young.

Children are instead using the internet to find out how to do simple domestic chores such as ironing a shirt, the survey of 1 500 grandparents revealed.

Susan Fermor, of cleaning specialist Dr Beckmann, said: “They are aware their grandchildren find it much easier to search the internet for instant advice.”

Nearly half of three and four-year-olds are technologically literate and 10 percent use iPads to surf the internet, watch films and television and play games, an Ofcom survey revealed last year.

Nearly one in four used the internet via PCs or laptops, and three percent accessed the web on a mobile phone. - Daily Mail
