San Francisco – The founder of Twitter has received death threats after it closed at least 2,000 accounts linked to Islamic State.

The extremist group has been adept at using the social networking site to boast about military gains and post propaganda photos. Intelligence experts believe the Twitter messages are being used as a recruiting tool to encourage jihadists to travel to Syria and Iraq.

The closure of accounts is believed to have led to death threats against the firm’s founder Jack Dorsey and his staff over the weekend.

A message posted on the internet called for IS supporters to kill Dorsey and decapitate any of his employees.

The FBI is investigating the threat and security has been stepped up around Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco.

The social media giant has refused to comment.

But sources told ABC News that at least 2,000 accounts linked to the terror group were no longer in operation.
