Durban - Take Durban anywhere. That is what popular radio personality Peter G wants listeners to do by tuning into DurbanZone Online Radio.
Live on the internet 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, DurbanZone Online Radio is an extension of the DurbanZone Online Magazine, established by Peter in 2010.
“I wanted a platform to promote Durban and, after the online magazine, the next step was radio, something I know like the back of my hand,” he said.
After nine years at East Coast Radio, Peter decided it was time to move on.
Recognising that the internet was the “new playground”, he continued with radio but drifted across to new airwaves online.
The online radio station went live last month and caters for “everyone and brings you everything you need to know about Durban”.
Peter is passionate about his city and beams while holding out open arms at a stunning city view.
“Don’t you just love it? People need to be proud and positive about this city, and focus on building it.”
The DurbanZone brand promotes events like theatre productions, the biggest and smallest local events, school news, lifestyle, wedding planning, DIY, fashion and movie reviews. Although he couldn’t stand being away while setting up a hospital radio station in the Northern Cape, the Durban boy has expanded the online magazine, launching CapeTownZone and JoburgZone.
But his home town is first to get an online radio platform allowing anyone anywhere in the world to get a taste of Durban.
Peter hosts a daily morning show while his business partner Ravi V, hosts a weekend show.
They also have the first of their trainees, Darryn Rex, bringing the hottest tracks on the charts on Sundays.
“DurbanZone Online Radio will become the home of some familiar voices in the weeks and months to come but at the same time, provide the platform to empower and groom up-and-coming radio personalities,” said Ravi.
Empowering young people who want a career on radio, whether it be in front of the microphone or the soundboard, is a priority for the pair – as is showcasing local music.
“I want to give the guy with a band in his garage who has good music airplay,” said Peter.
He regards radio as an extension of himself.
“I love the inner workings of radio and owning an online station allows for our creativity to flow, musically and from a content point of view.
“We have some exciting plans for DurbanZone Online Radio which will be revealed in the weeks to come,” said Peter.
Besides being available online from anywhere at any time, DurbanZone will also be broadcasting live at events. - Daily News
