Cape Town - What better place to air your deepest secrets than on a public Facebook page, where everyone else can see them.

UCT students have been anonymously confessing their inner thoughts via a new Facebook page, UCT Confessions. Students submit their secrets via a Google form, and the page’s curators moderate the confessions and post them anonymously.

The confessions are a mixture of scandalous, serious, lighthearted, and love declarations. While some may be unsuitable for newspapers, others were acceptable.

For example, one post, UCT Expression 768, read: “I can’t wait for the day that an interracial relationship is just referred to as a relationship.”

But a brief scroll up the page to UCT Expression 802: “I have not shaved my armpits for over a year, and get a kick from seeing people in the foodcourts, (particularly women) staring with revulsion.”

The page was founded on May 20. It already has almost 9 000 “likes”.

The creators, who wish to remain anonymous, said they wanted a platform where students could be heard anonymously. “Not everyone wants to associate themselves with their opinion.”

It is turning into a bit of a job for them. The founders told the Cape Argus their team of four takes shifts moderating and posting confessions – prioritising exams, of course.

In a typical day, they spend roughly 15 hours moderating the page.

However, some students were concerned that the nature of the site was damaging the reputation of their university.

One student, Kyle Rosco, said the raunchy confessions – like posts alleging students slept with professors, or gossip about drunken debauchery – were alarming and not reflective of the quality of UCT. - Cape Argus
