Manila - Twenty-two Taiwanese and Chinese nationals were arrested in the Philippines for allegedly operating a cyber-fraud syndicate that preys on people from China, police said on Tuesday. One Filipino was also arrested in the separate raids in the cities of Angeles and Pampanga, just north of Manila, on January 16, according to Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa, head of the police's anti-cybercrime group. Sosa said the 20 Taiwanese and two Chinese suspects targeted mostly nationals from China by pretending to be police officers, judges or state prosecutors. “They will threaten of freeze the bank accounts of victims for alleged involvement in money laundering activities, fraud or other crimes and persuade them to transfer all their money to another bank account,” he said. Philippine police have in the past arrested hundreds of Taiwanese and Chinese nationals operating similar syndicates in the country. The suspects were deported back to their home countries. - Sapa-dpa
