Belfast - Live internet chat firm Skype has said a software glitch caused the service's major outage last week.

In a blog post, chief information officer Lars Rabbe said the 24-hour outage that cut service for millions of users stemmed from a problem in a version of Skype's software for computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system.

chief executive Tony Bates “apologised profusely” for the technical problems that began on Wednesday and “took almost every user offline”.

“This has been a very tough 24 hours for many of our users,” he said. “Our priority has been to stabilise the problem, and then to begin to restore access to Skype.”

Bates said engineers had “stabilised Skype's core functionality - IM (instant messaging), audio and video - but it will take longer for us to restore offline IM and group video calling.” - Belfast Telegraph
