London - Who hasn’t cursed after accidentally dropping their mobile phone in the kitchen sink? Few, however, have dunked their phone in water on purpose.
But that was exactly what dozens of iPhone users did this week after being duped by false claims on the internet that downloading Apple’s new operating system, iOS7, would render the devices waterproof.
The spoof took the form of an advert — almost identical to Apple’s own. The slogan read, “Update to iOS7 and become waterproof”. It went on: “In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone’s power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone’s delicate circuitry.”
Some gullible souls took it to heart, drowning their phones to put iOS7 to the test. Many then reacted in horror when they discovered the truth. Furious Twitter users included someone who claimed their phone was now “at the bottom of a river”. - Daily Mail
