In 2013, South Africa occupied 70th place in the WEF rankings of 144 countries, according to their ability to benefit from the digital era.

Johannesburg - Verve recently documented the success of South Africa’s largest wi-fi hotspot network, AlwaysOn, so we were interested by Wednesday’s announcement by Samsung that it had partnered with AlwaysOn to provide new and existing Samsung smart device users with 1GB of free wi-fi access per month, for 12 months.

They’ll be able to use this at more than 1 200 AlwaysOn hotspots around the country. The service will be offered to wi-fi-enabled devices sold in the past three years.

“The partnership with AlwaysOn is a natural extension of our value proposition to our customers,” said Craige Fleischer, mobile communications director at Samsung SA.

“We live in the connected age and it makes sense for Samsung to incorporate a service offering that combines innovative mobile devices with national wireless connectivity.”

The deal will see customers receive 1GB of free wireless data monthly for a year, for every Samsung mobile wi-fi enabled device owned.

By not limiting the amount of data to the customer but rather the device, Samsung said it was enabling users to enjoy a connected experience across all its mobile products.

“We recognise the fact that people own multiple mobile devices to suit their digital lifestyle requirements. This offering is our way of thanking our local customers for their loyal support,” said Fleischer.

Nico Pretorius, managing director at AlwaysOn said: “This affiliation provides AlwaysOn with a broader customer base, while in turn, we can offer Samsung users substantial wi-fi coverage across the country.”

According to the Always On website, a Samsung user registration process will be announced by the end of March. - The Star
