Johannesburg - MWEB will be increasing data speeds in response to Telkom upgrading its line speeds, the company said on Thursday.

This would be at no extra cost to customers, MWEB said in a statement.

Telkom would be upgrading line speeds from November this year to February next year.

MWEB said its uncapped ADSL products would be automatically migrated early next year at no extra cost while premium uncapped products, which offered higher usage thresholds, remained unchanged.

“While we welcome Telkom's initiative to double the access line speeds at no extra costs to the end-user, ISP's (internet service providers) cannot be expected to absorb the costs of a corresponding increase in data products,” MWEB's ISP CEO Derek Hershaw said.

“We are currently in discussions with Telkom around a significant reduction in their wholesale IPC charges.”

If Telkom did not do this MWEB would ask the Competition Commission to intervene.

“We can then pass on the full benefits of the line speed upgrades to all of our customers,” Hershaw said. - Sapa
