Cape Town - Uncapped Internet was first launched in South Africa almost two years ago, but many South Africans have yet to make the switch to an unhindered Internet experience.
Carolyn Holgate, MWEB Connect GM, says one of the reasons for this is it's hard for consumers to know what they’re missing out on when they have not experienced an uncapped Internet scenario or don’t have friends who have an uncapped Internet connection.
“MWEB has launched a website (www.mweb.co.za/getuncapped) to help you understand what uncapped Internet offers you. The site also explains how to set up your various devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets and PCs) to get the most out of your uncapped Internet account,” she says.
The website features three characters and unpacks the hardware they use, their favourite online destinations, communities, videos, images and infographics.
There are the entertainment buffs - a couple downloading music and movies and streaming live content and using sites like the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com), Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com) and LastFM (www.last.fm).
Lastly, there’s the social media addict, connecting to the Internet from her smartphone via a Wi-Fi connection using Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com), while checking out fun videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com), LOLCats (http://icanhascheezburger.com/) and AutoCorrect (http://damnyouautocorrect.com)
The same characters also appear in a TV advert that will begin on 16 January 2012, or you can see it on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/MWEB?sk=wall.
The campaign was designed to give you a glimpse of an uncapped Internet lifestyle, as well as a taste of the extensive and exciting content the Internet has to offer, with some quick and easy tips on how to optimise your Internet experience, Holgate says.
Due to the country’s historically slow Internet expansion, South Africans have restricted their online behavior to fall within their bandwidth allotment. Aside from email, the occasional web browsing and Internet banking, most people haven’t yet harnessed the full power of the Internet and don’t know how to tap into it.
“Uncapped Internet access opens up a new world of opportunity, enabling you to enrich your personal and professional lives with information and entertainment, community and commerce. From watching your favourite shows online to making VoIP calls; shopping or gaming online; you can now explore content without having to worry about being capped,” says Holgate.

I still don't understand how MWEB can get away with calling their service uncapped when they have a acceptable usage clause that allows them to throttle you or charge you very high rates if you go over this accetable usage. How can that be uncapped? The are not being truthful in there advertising. Uncapped means no capping of any sort!

All is fantastic for these giants, what they fail to tell u is that the network is so oversubscribed that your throughput is limited. Just check at what speeds data is transferred to your PC. Most of the time you will not get the desired speeds as is expected for the money u pay…
