Johannesburg – Former world high jump champion Jacques Freitag has been released on bail following his arrest for alleged drug possession, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Freitag's lawyer, Fanie Le Roux, said his client was released on bail of R500 on Monday, after spending three days in jail for the possession of Cat (methcathinone).

After he allegedly went through a red robot in Bronkhorstspruit on Friday, officers stopped and searched him and found the drug in the pocket of his pants.

Freitag, 30, spent three days in a cell with 40 men, one open toilet and a blanket that had not been washed in years, Le Roux said.

“The world is watching Jacques, there are countless numbers of people out there to whom he can mean something... through this incident we intend to show the world that he's not a bad guy. He's a person who made a mistake.” Le Roux said his client was not a habitual drug user, and that he had been caught with only a very small amount of Cat.

Magistrate Mzwakhe Skosana ordered Freitag to report to the Bronkhorstspruit police station three times a week, and postponed the case for further investigation.– Sapa
