Johannesburg - Murder accused Paralympian Oscar Pistorius has resumed track training, but remains focused on the court case ahead of him, his family said on Pistorius's website.

“Oscar has decided to resume a low-key track routine,” spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess said in a statement on behalf of the Pistorius family on Thursday.

“Oscar is not contemplating a formal return to athletics and his training is not aimed at preparing for competition.”

Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder after his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead in his Pretoria home on February 14. During a bail hearing in February, Pistorius's defence read out a statement in which he said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder.

Burgess said that Pistorius's family encouraged him to train for a few hours each week to “assist him in finding the necessary mental and emotional equilibrium to process his trauma and prepare for the (trial)”.

“His focus, at this point, remains entirely on the court case.”

Pistorius, who was granted bail in February, will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court again on August 19. - Sapa
