Johannesburg – National record holder Sunette Viljoen finished third in the women's javelin throw at the Diamond League athletics meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday evening.
Viljoen, the only South African competing at the meeting, heaved a best effort of 64.08 metres in the fifth round.
Olympic gold medallist Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic won with a best throw of 67.19m and Russian Mariya Abakumova took second place.
The German pairing of Christina Obergfoll and Linda Stahl, the Olympic silver and bronze medallists, were fourth and sixth respectively.
Viljoen, who was fourth at the London Games, was left lying second in the Diamond League race in her event, seven points behind Spotakova, after the 11th of 14 meetings in the series this season. – Sapa
