Barrichello aims to win for Ferrari

Brazilian Formula One driver Rubens Barrichello claimed on Wednesday that joining Ferrari was an answer to a prayer he'd made to God.

Barrichello will replace Ulsterman Eddie Irvine alongside Michael Schumacher next season - and made it clear that his aim was to win, rather than do everything to help his teammate.

"Being with Ferrari means having the possibility to win - and that's what I asked God for," Barrichello said.

"Brazilians are very excited at seeing one of their own in a Formula One Ferrari and above all to see a Brazilian who could win a race or, who knows, even more than that.

"I always start out thinking I can win the race, and therefore also the world championship," he said.

"But if I felt that I was obliged to win at Melbourne, that would be a problem," he admitted. "I'd be under too much pressure. I just need to stay calm, put in some good times and then think about winning."

Team tactics have been a thorny subject at Ferrari in the past, with Irvine firmly in the position of number two driver.

But Barrichello said: "We are both racing for the team, my role depends on me. If I can win the first race, they'll let me win it.

"If, halfway through the season, Michael has got 20 points more than me, then obviously I'll help him."

But he added: "We've got the same car, the same engine and I'll clearly be racing to win. I haven't come to Ferrari to stay behind. My aim is to win every race." - Sapa-AFP
