Joyi beats Rojas to win WBA title

East London – Nkosinathi Joyi bounced back in style when he won the the WBA interim mini-flyweight title in East London on Saturday night.

Joyi stopped Argentine Walter Rojas in the first round to redeem himself, after Mexican Mario Rodriguez snatched away the South African's IBF minimumweight crown three months ago.

It took Joyi only two minutes, 13 seconds to stop Rojas, who went into the fight with a record of 23 wins and two defeats.

Meanwhile, Zolani Marali dethroned Ali Funeka on points in a WBF junior-welterweight title contest in the main supporting bout.

Tshifhiwa Munyai beat Oscar Chauke to win the vacant WBA Pan-African junior-featherweight crown, while Macbute Sinyabi struggled before overcoming Pfariso Neluvhalani to retain his SA junior-featherweight title.

Gabisile Tshabalala retained her SA women's junior-featherweight title with a points win over Nomvelo Magcaba. – Sapa
