Johannesburg – Zimbabwean heavyweight sensation Elvis Moyo has fired a strong warning to the opposition – he is no longer a whipping boy in South African boxing.
The Johannesburg-based warrior goes shoulder-to-shoulder with seasoned boxer Danie Venter, over six rounds, in Pretoria North City Hall on Saturday.
Moyo, who shocked South African boxing circles when he held former SA heavyweight champion Osborne Machimana to a draw in March, said he was being used to groom up-and-coming boxers.
“I’m no longer a novice and whoever comes to the fight with that mentality, will be at his own funeral,” Moyo said.
“In my first three fights, I was whipped left, right and centre but since then I have improved,” he said.
“Losing on points against an experienced Joseph Chingangu, and holding Machimana to a draw, speaks volumes about my improvement.”
Speaking about his contest with Venter, Moyo said he was raring to go.
“The preparations went well and I’m in good shape for the fight. My main concern is a victory,” Moyo said.
Venter said he had not come across Moyo before but was equally determined to put up a good fight.
“I don’t know much about him but I expect he is a big boxer and I will fight like never before,” Venter said.
The 34-year-old Venter boasts more experience with six losses from his 22 fights, while Moyo has won three and drawn two from only nine outings. – Sapa
