The drama surrounding the future of Cape Cobras coach Paul Adams will continue into next week after a heated Western Cape Cricket executive board meeting failed to reach a consensus on Thursday night.
Adams’ position at the helm of the Western Cape franchise has come under scrutiny after the majority of the Cobras squad lodged a “formal grievance” with regards to the “breakdown in their relationship with the coach”.
It was expected, though, that despite the unhappiness of the players, Adams still had the support of the WCC executive board and that he would remain in his post after Thursday night’s meeting.
However, upon receiving a report from “mediator” Paddy Upton – the former Proteas mental conditioning coach and current Sydney Thunder mentor – the board have yet to make a final decision on Adams’ future.
The WCC executive board will now instead call the aggrieved players into a crisis meeting on Monday morning, where the latest developments will be discussed in greater detail.
A follow-up WCC board meeting will take place on Monday evening, where an ultimate decision will be made.
The Cape Times understands that at the top of the players’ grievances list is that Adams is not technically and tactically adept, and that he lacks the man-management skills to take the team to the next level.
Adams, though, is in possession of a new two-year contract and has undergone a leadership course during the winter in a bid to enhance his coaching capabilities.
