Stephen Cook continued his outstanding season with a century on the first day of the Sunfoil Series clash between the bizhub Highveld Lions and Cape Cobras in Potchefstroom on Thursday.

The veteran opener, who was called up the Proteas’ Test squad in January and subsequently struck three figures on debut, moved to the top of the four-day scoring charts with 150 (226 balls, 20 fours) as the hosts reached stumps on 346/3 at Senwes Park.

It was Cook’s 37th first-class century and took his season aggregate beyond 500 runs in only his seventh innings – moving ahead of Heino Kuhn in the process.

He shared in a Lions second-wicket record of 261 with Dominic Hendricks, who was still there at the close on 130 not out (266 balls, 22 fours).

Their partnership surpassed the previous record of 234, held by Hendricks himself and Alviro Petersen against the Warriors back in the 2013/14 season.

The stand was eventually ended by Stiaan van Zyl, the pick of the bowlers with 1/28.

By the close, there was another worrying partnership of 52 that was blossoming between Hendricks and Yassar Cook (34) as the home side ended the day in complete control. - Cricket South Africa
