DURBAN - Cameron Delport, now employed as a limited-overs hired gun, is another of the Dolphins' key weapons for the latter stages of the Momentum One-Day Cup.

The left-handed opener, who has just come back from another stint in the Pakistan Super League for Lahore, has been given licence to blast in his customary manner upfront, as the men from KZN look to take a bit more from the new ball.

Delport, who shares the South African opening record with Morné van Wyk in List A cricket, may not play as much domestically as he did in the past, but his abilities or ambitions have certainly not been blunted by his international assignments.

Delport joins the returning Van Wyk, as well as national duo Imran Tahir and Andile Phehlukwayo as reinforcements for the second half of the cup competition. Much like the Cobras' Richard Levi, no ground is big enough to contain him when he gets going.

"With Immy and Andile returning, as well as Cameron being back in the mix, it really is one of the strongest squads that we can assemble," coach Grant Morgan enthused before they left for Cape Town on Tuesday.

Morgan admitted that the team had dropped their standards against the Warriors, after holding their nerve in some tight wins at the start of the competition.

Finding themselves at the top of the tree may have even surprised a few within the team, and Morgan challenged his side to deal with it.

"I've told the guys that we must embrace being top of the table. We've got to want to get back there," he explained.

A win against the Cobras in Paarl on Wednesday would take the Dolphins to the summit again, and it is the best place to be to secure the smoothest passage to the final.

Morgan, ever the statistician, noted that they had yet to beat the Cobras this season.

"They are the only side that we haven't beaten, so we definitely owe them a good hiding," he quipped.

The mood in the camp remains upbeat, and the Durbanites had a double reason to celebrate on Tuesday, with skipper Khaya Zondo and batsman Sbonelo Makhanya celebrating their birthdays on the same day.

With the Cobras firmly in their sights, the cake and Fanta has been put on hold, and the team will be looking for a win to provide the necessary icing for the pair.

The expanded squad has certainly given Morgan considerable food for thought when it comes to combinations, but these are good problems.

There was a point, in the middle of the season, when injuries ravaged his depth to the point of no return, especially in the fast bowling department.

Competition for places is as fierce as ever now, and the Dolphins' coach is banking on that motivation spilling onto fine performances on the field. Starting on the road, against a Cobras side that has had the wood on them all campaign.

The match starts at 2pm, with coverage on Supersport starting at 1:50pm on Wednesday.
