Lance Klusener was effectively appointed the new coach of the Dolphins after a marathon boardroom session at Kingsmead yesterday. It has been a long, hard road for the former Proteas all-rounder since he took over as interim coach after Graham Ford quit towards the end of last season.
Despite gaining the enthusiastic support of the entire Dolphins squad, the union’s six-man selection panel was initially split over Klusener’s credentials, with the president, Faeez Jaffar, and vice-presidents, Logan Naidoo and Ernest Molotsi, voting against him.
Those who voted for him were former Proteas and Dolphins cricketer Errol Stewart, the convener of the Dolphins’ selectors Yunus Bobat, and the president of KZN Inland, Yunus Bhamjee.
Yesterday, however, after a psychometric test involving Klusener and his only opponent, former Cobras coach Shukri Conrad, the vote swung his way and all that remains is for the KZN Cricket Union’s board to confirm the panel’s decision.
