The T20 Challenge match between the Highveld Lions and the Dolphins was abandoned on Friday after the Wanderers pitch was deemed too dangerous for play to continue.
The Dolphins had won the toss and sent the Lions in to bat but, during play, the batsmen and the umpires were constantly examining the pitch.
After six overs, the players shook hands and walked off, indicating the game was over.
Third umpire Dennis Smith said conditions were too dangerous and unpredictable for the match to continue.
“The pitch was declared dangerous and unplayable after sweating under the covers for two days,” said Smith.
The soft pitch meant that each time the ball landed, it caused a divot and play became unpredictable.
After half an hour’s play, the Lions were on 24/2.
West Indian fast bowler Fidel Edwards got the wicket of opening batsman Jonathan Vandiar, who made six runs.
Youngster Quinton de Kock, who contributed two, was caught at short third man by David Miller off Robert Frylinck.
Gulam Bodi was unbeaten on 10 and Neil McKenzie had yet to face a ball.
The Dolphins seem to attract the bad weather wherever they go – it is their sixth rain-affected match in a row.
Three games were abandoned without a ball being bowled and they lost Wednesday’s match against the Knights by eight runs, with the game being decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method. – Sapa
