Port Elizabeth – Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson took five wickets to go with Andrew Puttick's century to see the Cape Cobras to a 72-run victory over the Warriors in their One-Day Cup match at St George's Park on Friday.
Peterson ran through the Warrior's middle order to help restrict the Warriors to 206 in pursuit of 279 for victory.
Warriors captain Colin Ingram fought almost a lone crusade in making 101 off 104 balls for the home team but it was all in vain.
The Warriors got off to a bright start despite losing Jon-Jon Smuts early.
Ingram and Michael Price set about Cobras quick bowlers and looked to setting a good foundation until Peterson was introduced into the attack.
He bowled Price for 32 and then added the middle order wickets of Ryan Bailey, Somila Seyibokwe, Christiaan Jonker and Ingram to finish with five wickets for 25 runs in 10 overs.
That was enough break the spine of the Warriors and there was little resistance from the remainder of the batsmen apart from Ingram.
Earlier, Puttick produced a master-class in batting to score a superb 101 in what ultimately proved to be the backbone of the Cobras' formidable total.
It was Puttick's 11th List A hundred and one which assisted in posting a record stand of 140 for the first wicket with fellow opener Richard Levi.
The pair beat the Cobras' previous best against the Warriors of 129 set by Henry Davids and Puttick in Cape Town in 2008-2009.
The Warriors bowlers dominated the early exchanges by displaying good early discipline with the ball.
They kept matters tight up front and so much so that Levi offered a sharp chance to captain Colin Ingram off the bowling of seamer Andrew Birch.
Levi had 20 at that stage and the Cobras 28 and it was chance that the Warriors skipper would perhaps feel he should have held on to.
He then got stuck into the Warriors attack and thrashed 75 runs off 93 balls with seven fours and three well-struck sixes.
Levi scored freely on both sides of the wicket and was eventually run out by a combination of Ingram and Jon-Jon Smuts much to the relief of the home side and their smattering of fans.
Puttick, who was then joined by Cobras captain Justin Ontong, did not let the dismissal of his opening partner distract him from the job at hand.
The tall lefthander hit eight fours and one six off 125 balls. He was eventually bowled by Birch with the total on 230 in 44th over. – Sapa
