Johannesburg - Knights all-rounder Johan van der Wath has been banned for one Sunfoil Series match for swearing, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Cape Cobras captain Justin Ontong was allowed to continue playing for his franchise pending the results of a ball test in Australia.
Van der Wath did not attend his disciplinary hearing, but wrote a letter of apology for the hearing proceedings.
“I find Mr Van der Wath guilty of a breach of clause 6.3.1 (f) of the Code of Conduct, in that he used language that is seriously obscene, offensive or insulting towards another participant,” CSA disciplinary commissioner Rian Cloete said in his ruling.
“I take into account the fact that Mr Van der Wath has not sought to evade responsibility for his conduct, that he had admitted the offence and offered his sincere apology in writing.”
Van der Wath will miss his franchise's Sunfoil Series match against the Warriors from January 17 in Bloemfontein.
“As far as the complaint against Mr Justin Ontong is concerned, I hereby confirm that the ball in question will be sent to Kookaburra, Victoria, Australia for examination and testing,” Cloete said.
“The matter will, therefore, be held in abeyance pending the results of the testing, and Mr Justin Ontong is eligible for selection until further notice.” - Sapa
