Ab De Villiers may not have been able to lead his team to World Cup glory earlier this year, but the Proteas One-Day International captain was the big individual winner at Cricket South Africa’s glittering season-ending awards gala at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand last night.

He swept the boards, winning five awards, including the prestigious South African Cricketer of the Year, for the second year in a row, matching former Proteas fast bowler Makhaya Ntini (2005 and 2006). Jacques Kallis (2004 and 2011) and Hashim Amla (2010 and 2013) are the other players to be awarded twice.

He was also named ODI Cricketer of the Year while his fellow players and fans voted him in as SA Players’ Player of the Year and SA Fans’ Player of the Year. The skipper did not just rewrite the record books last season, but also scored two centuries against the West Indies. One of these innings – the fastest ODI century ever – also earned him the “So Good Award”.

“AB surely must be the best all-rounder in the world. His No 2 ranking in Test match cricket and No 1 in ODI cricket only tells a part of his amazing skills,” said CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat. “AB now holds the world records for the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in ODIs.– Pretoria News
