COLOMBO - Hashim Amla reached his 22nd Test century, as he continued his vigil at the crease against Sri Lanka. The Proteas, replying to Sri Lanka’s 421 all out, fought to 234 for seven at tea on the third day.

Amla, who picked up on 77 after lunch, watched on as JP Duminy was stumped off the bowling of Dilruwan Perera for three off 58 balls. The Sri Lankan off-spinner, switching between over and around the wicket, then bowled Vernon Philander with a classic off-break delivery, which clipped the top of off-stump.

Amla, meanwhile, went to his first century as South African captain, off 253 balls. At the other end, Dale Steyn mixed defence with aggression, to reach the tea-break having avoided the follow-on. Steyn will resume on 18 not out, while the resolute Amla is on 118 not out.

The Proteas still trail by 187 runs.
