Johannesburg – Record-breaking batsman Hashim Amla has been lauded by his domestic franchise.

The Dolphins, the team Amla represents at domestic level, said on Monday it was a “proud” moment for KwaZulu-Natal cricket when he became the first South African player to make more than 300 runs in a Test innings at The Oval.

“What an outstanding innings, what an amazing effort,” Dolphins chief executive Jesse Chellan said in a statement.

“It's been a pleasure and joy to watch Hashim, Graeme and Jacques destroy the English attack over the past two days.

“Hashim got to the crease in a very difficult situation on Friday evening but batted through to take apart an English attack that has been excellent this season.

“He was patient, he was focussed, he was fluent, he was unflappable, he was dominant and he has just played the greatest innings in the history of Test Cricket for South Africa.

“We salute you Hashim. This is a truly proud moment for Dolphins and Proteas cricket.”

Amla contributed an unbeaten 311 runs as the Proteas declared their first innings at 637/2 on Sunday, making a strong push for victory on the fourth day of the first Test against England.

His score surpassed the previous South African Test record held by AB de Villiers who made 278 not out against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in November 2010.

“Hashim has continued to be an outstanding role model,” said KZN Cricket Union president Faeez Jaffar.

“His self belief, dedication, perseverance and hard work has paid off.

“Despite all his achievements, being it from school level to national level, his quality of humility has stood out.

“He has continued to be a humble servant of the game and has not been afraid to give advice and speak his mind.”

Amla has hit 15 centuries in 60 Test matches and his record innings at the weekend pushed his average above 50 (50.26).

He also boasts a remarkable average in one-day internationals, with 2 881 runs, including nine tons, and an average of 56.49 from 57 games. – Sapa
