Vernon Philander made a dream debut for South Africa, taking his first Test wicket in the opening session of the first Test against Australia at Newlands on Wednesday.
After losing two early wickets, Australia rallied to go to lunch on 39/2.
Philander's well-deserved wicket came after he got the ball to move away from opener Phillip Hughes (9), catching the edge of his bat.
The wicket earned wicketkeeper Mark Boucher the accolade of being the first Test cricketer to take 500 catches.
Playing in his 140th Test, Boucher has taken 498 catches behind the stumps for South Africa while two were taken when he represented the ICC World XI against Australia in October 2009.
Graeme Smith's decision to put the opposition into bat first paid off early as Dale Steyn made the breakthrough, dismissing Shane Watson (3), caught by Jacques Kallis at second slip.
Play started almost two hours late, due to a rain delay before the toss and, at the end of a shortened session, Australia went into lunch with Shaun Marsh on 17 and Ricky Ponting on 8. – Sapa

One is very pleased that Philander is back in the international frame. However, he needs to improve his image. His dismissive gum chewing does not present an endearing pictute. SOmeone needs to inform him. Also, what deos he do with all the spent gum?
