Johannesburg – JP Duminy has been ruled out of the rest of South Africa's tour of Australia with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon, Cricket SA (CSA) said on Friday.
“The injury occurred during a fitness training drill after the opening day of the first Test at the Gabba,” CSA said in a statement.
Team manager and doctor Mohammed Moosajee said Duminy heard a loud clicking sound which felt like he had been hit by an object.
“The diagnosis of an Achilles' tendon rupture was confirmed by the MRI scan Friday evening 1/8Australia time 3/8 and he will undergo surgery to re-attach the tendon on Saturday morning.
“Injuries of this nature are caused by a sudden contraction against the direction of movement by the calf muscle as was the case during his sprint.”
Moosajee said the expected recovery date would only be determined in a few weeks time, but injuries of this nature were known to take up to at least six months to heal.
“He is obviously disappointed, but JP, being JP, is trying his best to stay positive, and says everything happens for a reason,” Moosajee said
Twelfth man Francois du Plessis would assume fielding duties for the rest of the current Test match.
Duminy would return to South Africa as soon as possible and a replacement would be named in due course. – Sapa
