The International Cricket Council have slapped Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis with a one-match ban for maintaining a slow over-rate during the World Twenty20 match against the Netherlands here at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Thursday.

Du Plessis will now miss the virtual “quarter-final” against England on Saturday with AB de Villiers taking over the leadership reins. De Villiers led South Africa in the first game against Sri Lanka when Du Plessis was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

South Africa had received a caution earlier in the tournament for their slow over rate when Du Plessis was fined 40% of his match fee while his teammates copped a 20% fine each in the second Group 1 match against New Zealand last Monday.

A second breach is an automatic one-match suspension. ICC match referee David Boon imposed the suspension. Du Plessis’ Titans teammate Farhaan Behardien is expected to take his captain's place in the Proteas starting line-up. Although Behardien is a capable batsman, losing Du Plessis is a big blow to South Africa as he has showed his good leadership skills in the last two matches.

Boon, the former Australian top-order batsman, has been busy of late as he has also suspended Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal from their final group game against New Zealand for maintaining a slow over rate for the second time inside 12 months under his leadership.

England captain Stuart Broad was also fined 40% of his match fee for the same offence in the match against Sri Lanka, but due it being his first offence, Broad has escaped missing the South African game.
