Proteas captain and wicket-keeper AB de Villiers has made a catch that he does not want to let go.

He proposed to his girlfriend in India on Sunday and announced the news via Twitter on Tuesday morning.

“Got engaged to the girl of my dreams,” De Villiers tweeted, adding: “It was an amazing experience.”

His agent, Letitia Greyling confirmed the engagement, saying De Villiers had proposed to Danielle Swart at the Taj Mahal in the Indian city of Agra. She said the couple had known each other for five years.

Greyling said she did not know whether they had set a date for the wedding yet.

Their engagement comes just over a year since De Villiers’s team mate and Test captain, Graeme Smith, announced that he had proposed to Irish singer and model Morgan Deane. They tied the knot in August.

De Villiers was recently made captain of the Proteas One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 (T20) sides, taking over from Smith.

He recently joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore for this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

With a gruelling schedule of Tests, ODIs, the IPL and the T20 World Cup all coming up in this year’s cricket calendar, De Villiers could find himself struggling to find the time to organise a wedding too.
