COLOMBO - Mahela Jayawardene’s 34th Test century saw Sri Lanka reach 212 for three at tea on the first day of the second Test against South Africa at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
Skipper Angelo Mathews, who won the toss and elected to bat first, was also at the crease on 48 not out, as Sri Lanka carried on scoring at a healthy run rate. The pair have already added 97 for the fourth wicket, after Jayawardene had added 99 for the previous stand with Kaushal Silva, who made 44.
Silva was the last wicket to fall in a frenetic first session, which saw Dale Steyn strike twice in the fifth over of the match, before the Sri Lankans got on top of the bowling, scoring at over four runs an over.
The South Africans went through the middle session without a breakthrough, and have already used all three of their spin options in their line-up, with Dean Elgar given the final over of the session. South Africa lead the two –match series 1-0 after their win in Galle last week.
