Johannesburg - South African team manager Mohammed Moosajee said on Sunday that three of the Proteas’ key players had suffered injuries during the second Test match against England at Headingley.
He named Alviro Petersen, Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis as the affected players.
“Alviro's hamstring strain is coming along,” Moosajee said at the close of play on Sunday.
“He is still about seven days away from full fitness and if he has to bat in this Test match he will.”
According to Moosajee, Smith is batting with a heavily strapped left knee.
“He jammed his knee into the ground while fielding a ball at the boundary on Saturday.
“We assume that he may have damaged something from a posterior aspect, either his cartilage or meniscus, but we will have a proper look once the Test match is over.”
Moosajee said their main concern was Kallis, who was suffering spasms in his lower back.
“Jacques has had this problem before and, with his long career and with him being an all-rounder, the load that he has to handle has affected his back,” he said.
“He strained it while diving for a catch in the slips yesterday and he will be closely monitored overnight to see how he responds to treatment.
