LONDON: Dawid Malan could be given a shock England Test debut against South Africa at Lord’s next Thursday.

The opener impressed in the Twenty-20 decider in Cardiff on Sunday, helping secure a series win after smashing 78 in 44 balls.

Malan, 29, could benefit from Haseeb Hameed’s dip in form, with Hameed’s Lancashire teammate Jos Buttler also set to miss out. Other names in the frame when the selectors meet at Worcester’s New Road today will be the uncapped pair of Surrey opener Mark Stoneman and Middlesex all-rounder Toby Roland-Jones.

Former South Africa U-19 captain Keaton Jennings, who made his Test debut for England against India in December, is also an option and has a chance to stake his claim in the on-going three-day tour match against the Proteas in Worcester.

England coach Trevor Bayliss said: “In the two years I’ve been here, it will be the toughest selection meeting I’ve had. It’s a good problem to have, though.”
