Cape Town - A five-wicket haul from Vernon Philander and wickets from Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel made short, sharp work of New Zealand as they were all out for 45 before lunch on the first day of the Newlands Test on Wednesday.
It was the 12th lowest innings total of all time and the lowest score since 1974.
Australia collapsed to 47 at Newlands in 2011 but New Zealand’s meagre 45 made it the lowest total ever at Newlands.
Dale Steyn became the fourth South African to take 300 wickets when he removed Doug Bracewell’s middle stump and took a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Daniel Flynn at the end of the innings.
Philander took his eighth five-wicket haul in only his 13th Test, returning outstanding figures of 5/7 while Morne Morkel bagged 3/14 and Steyn 2/18. - Sapa
