Quinton de Kock fell on the stroke of the break for 36, caught and bowled by Dilruwan Perera, who had grabbed four wickets by the break.
Earlier, AB de Villiers had compiled a stylish 51 from just 58 balls, as the tourists sought quick runs in the middle session. De Villiers' half-century added weight to decent contributions by Alviro Petersen (32), Faf du Plessis (37) and skipper Hashim Amla (22), who all tried to keep the tempo going.
Perera, bowling his off-spin accurately, added the wickets of Amla, De Villiers and De Kock to that of Petersen before lunch, to register figures of four for 79.
JP Duminy is at the crease on 8 not out, and he will be joined by Vernon Philander after tea.
