Galle - South Africa toiled on to 331 for seven at lunch on day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Resuming on an overnight score of 268 for five, the tourists lost night-watchman Dale Steyn for three, as he became Suranga Akmal's third victim of the innings.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Quinton de Kock, who had resumed on 17, went on to register his maiden Test half-century, off 86 balls with six boundaries.

The left-hander was to last just four more balls, though, as he was well caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene, off the bowling of Dilruwan Perera, who also picked up his third wicket of the innings.

At lunch, the Proteas had JP Duminy (22 not out) and Vernon Philander (3 not out) at the crease. – Independent Newspapers
