Dale Steyn induced an edge from Shane Watson and Jacques Kallis taking the catch safely in the slips.
Debutant Vernon Philander, sharing the new-ball with Steyn, claimed his first Test wicket when he had Phillip Hughes caught by Mark Boucher for nine.
Former skipper Ricky Ponting and Shaun Marsh are currently at the wicket trying to repair the damage.
