Johannesburg – South Africa suffered a blow on Saturday with the news that opening batsman Alviro Petersen sustained a hamstring injury during his mammoth batting session on the first two days of the second Test against England at Headingley in Leeds.
Petersen, who made a career-best 182, was sent for an MRI scan, which confirmed a Grade One strain.
SA team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said Petersen would be unavailable for the rest of the match, but that the batsman would play if he was needed at the crease during the second Test.
“The radiologist's report from the MRI scan revealed that Alviro suffered a Grade One strain to his right hamstring muscle,” Moosajee said.
“This type of injury usually requires a recovery time of approximately 7-10 days.
“However if he is needed to bat in the Proteas' second innings he will do so.”
Faf du Plessis was brought on as Petersen's fielding replacement and would see out the remainder of the Test match. – Sapa
