Johannesburg – The West Indies defeated South Africa by two wickets, in the first of their Super Six round matches in the ICC Women's World Cup in Cuttack, India, on Friday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, South Africa scored 230/7. Wicketkeeper Trisha Chetty top-scored with 45, sharing a half-century stand with captain Mignon du Preez (31).
Cri-zelda Brits looked set for a big total until she was run out on 44.
The West Indians used eight bowlers and gave away 27 extras, which included 16 wides and three no-balls.
They chased down the target with ease, reaching 234/8, with 27 balls to spare.
Player of the match was Stafanie Taylor for her innings of 75 runs. She shared a crucial second-wicket stand of 126 runs with opener Kycia Knight.
Teenager Dane van Niekerk caught and bowled Knights, on 46, to break the partnership, and she was the pick of the South African bowlers, bagging three wickets for 47 runs.
Marizanne Kapp took 2/42 while the other wickets were shared among the other bowlers.
South Africa, though, were also guilty of conceding 18 wides.
