Wickets tumble at Newlands

Proteas

Television umpire Billy Bowden had a busy afternoon at Newlands and was involved in six of the 12 dismissals in the afternoon session on day two of the opening Test between South Africa and Australia on Thursday.

At tea, Australia found themselves at 13/3 after they had dispensed with South Africa for 96 runs in their first innings.

Australia's hero with the ball, Shane Watson, who returned figures of 5/17, was back in the change room early when he was adjudged lbw to Dale Steyn.

Watson, who made four runs, seemed to hesitate but decided against a review after he was given out by umpire Ian Gould.

Television replays, however, showed the ball was going over the stumps.

Michael Clarke, who had resumed Australia's first innings in the morning, found himself back at the crease for the second time in the day after Ricky Ponting's review confirmed he was out, lbw to Philander, for a duck.

The latest available score is Australia 21/8 with Test debutant Vernon Philander claiming four wickets. – Sapa
