Pretoria – West Indies bowler Kemar Roach took two wicket for 16 to set South Africa back to 102 for three at lunch on day one of the first Test in Centurion on Wednesday.
The hosts were cruising along at 57 for no loss with an hour gone in the match after a rain-delayed start in the 14th over, before Roach made inroads into the South African lineup.
He got the ball to move in off a good length and Alviro Petersen edged the ball to Devon Smith to depart for 27.
In the next over, Elgar was out for 28 when he failed to get on top of the bounce from a Sheldon Cottrell delivery, stroking the ball straight to Marlon Samuels at gully – leaving the hosts 57 for two.
The West Indies struck a third time as Faf du Plessis was squared up by Roach and edged behind to wicketkeeper captain Denesh Ramdin for a duck, reducing South Africa to 57 for three.
At the break, Hashim Amla (25) and AB de Villiers (16) had put on 45 runs for a fourth wicket partnership to aid the recovery of the home side.
Earlier, the West Indies started the day in poor fashion with conditions best-suited for bowling. They were wayward in their line and length and Petersen – under pressure for not scoring a Test century in 23 innings – was gifted two deliveries on his legs which he dispatched to the boundary to start his knock.
Elgar also cashed in on some loose bowling as South Africa raced along in the first hour at over four runs per over. – Sapa
