Captain Michael Clarke resumed on 107 in the morning session, with the hosts at 214/8, and went on to make 151, his highest Test score against South Africa.
Clarke shared a 59-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Peter Siddle to keep the tail wagging.
Fast bowler Dale Steyn took 4/55, while Vernon Philander, on debut, and Morne Morkel took three apiece. – Sapa
