Eoin Morgan can shrug off his Twenty20 batting failure to lead England in the 2019 World Cup, according to Trevor Bayliss.
Morgan managed just 66 runs in six innings in India and twice fell to his first ball. But in a side that bats from Nos 1 to 11, the poor form of one player was easily overcome — especially when that player is the man who has moulded two white-ball teams in his innovative, carefree image.
The 29-year-old captained his side impressively during the tournament and England coach Bayliss believes Morgan (below) will use the achievement of reaching the final as a springboard to a successful summer and beyond, with both the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 World Cup to be held in England and Wales.
Bayliss said: ‘What he’s done as captain of this team, he deserves a lot longer. Morgs has been around long enough that there have been ups and downs in his career. I’m sure he’ll come back from this.
‘You feel disappointed for anyone when they are not scoring the runs they would like. The good thing about this team is that someone else took up the slack throughout the tournament.
‘I don’t think there’s ever 100 per cent of the batters scoring loads of runs — there are always one or two guys missing out. The good teams are the ones where their mates make up for that.
‘I’ve had so many texts and emails already saying that cricket is back on the front page, back in people’s minds where maybe in the last year or two it hasn’t been.
‘I think that support will carry on over into the players. I’m looking forward to the summer.’ – Daily Mail
