Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt.
London – Salman Butt's lawyers say the former Pakistan cricket captain has been released from prison just seven months into a 2½-year sentence for involvement in a spot-fixing scandal.
London-based firm 25 Bedford Row says Butt will return to Pakistan on Friday after leaving Canterbury Prison and “will work with his barrister in relation to the next step in his endeavours to return to the cricketing world”.
Butt's barrister, Yasin Patel, says his client “has had to endure a great deal of suffering, strain, pressure and humiliation over many months” and can now return to Pakistan “to start to rebuild his reputation”.
Butt was found guilty last November of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments by ensuring no-balls were bowled in a Test against England. – Sapa-AP
