London – Kevin Pietersen is believed to have taken the first step on the long road back to England redemption on Saturday by meeting with team director Andy Flower in an attempt to convince him he can be trusted.

The batsman, exiled for undermining team unity by sending “provocative” texts about former captain Andrew Strauss to “close friends” in the South African dressing room, requested to meet Flower to discuss the issues that led to him being dropped for the final Test of the Investec series at Lord’s.

Flower is understood to have agreed to the meeting to gauge Pietersen’s level of sincerity, before considering further talks involving new captain Alastair Cook, ECB managing director Hugh Morris and the player’s agent Adam Wheatley.

But several senior England players are resisting his return. – Mail On Sunday
